Abstract
Dutch interpreters are employed by local government in Nagasaki and classed as local government officials. Due to the factors involving the complexity of the trading with the Dutch, especially the regulation of the Dutch trading after 1715, the opening of Japan to foreign trade in 1859, the official functions of Dutch interpreters were diversified, with the needs to increase the kinds of works and the number of interpreters. Generally, the official roles of Chinese interpreters were more complex and varied than those of Dutch interpreters. Thus, additions of official positions and salaries for Dutch interpreters were naturally considered to have complied with those of Chinese interpreters.
