Tsunami evacuation of ships became a major concern for ship operators after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. During tsunami emergency situations, it is important to make appropriate decisions as to whether a ship should unberth even without sufficient support from tugboats or stay in port and be held in place by enhancing mooring lines. Although the estimated time to escape from the port is essential information in making decisions, there are few studies on evacuation simulation, and the influence of the so-called wall effect on ship unberthing remains unclear. Therefore, model experiments were conducted to investigate the wall effect on ship unberthing, and a simple estimation formula was proposed. Finally, the importance of considering the wall effect on ship emergency unberthing was discussed.
