Due to the configuration of separated SubModule (SM) capacitors, factory operation test and system test at installation site for STAtic synchronous COMpensator (STATCOM) using Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC)’s require an energization of capacitors from AC bus. However, from the stability point of view of the connected power system, the impact on the AC bus is desired to be minimum. The authors propose novel test methods and performed the tests using practical type of MMC STATCOM.
The test results proved that the STATCOM performance can be tested based on requirements of IEC 62927 and CIGRE TECHNICAL BROCHURES 697.
