The huge step formed by changing temperature and the strength of magnetic field on the surface of a tetragonal crystal of hen egg-white lysozyme was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the huge step consisted of thick layers which had a thickness of a few micrometers, and there were two kinds of surface at equivalent sites. We consider that the sudden changes in temperature and magnetic field allow new aspects to be observed.
