Abstract

In the current course of study, the topic of “time-use” has been included in elementary school and high school, but not in junior high school. Introducing the topic of time-use into the junior high school level would make it possible for students to gain insights into the relationship between the individual/ family and society, and would facilitate their further learning through step-by-step implementation. The purpose of this study is to clarify junior high school students’ learning in the process of using the timeuse survey, and to consider the possibility of time-use data as teaching materials and practical use at the junior high school level. A total of 116 students in the first grade of a junior high school participated in the survey. In the teaching practice, it was found that the students gradually deepened their thinking in a way that objectively captured the time-use of ordinary adults, reviewed their own and their families’ timeuse, and considered their future lifestyles. By using time-use data in teaching practice, it was possible to instill critical consciousness of various issues such as the inequality of unpaid and paid work, suggesting the possibilities for the promotion of gender-equal participation in society.
