The objective of this study was to clarify the meaning of spontaneous participation in lesson study workshops for home economics teachers. Informal lesson study workshops were held in July and September in 2019. Professional pedagogues working and researching in a university organized the workshops, and they were planned as a forum for home economics teachers, meeting together and discussing what a “good lesson” for home economics education is. The topic was food education focusing on SDGs. Teachers were required to construct their lessons with global perspectives. The group discussions were recorded, and the dialogues were analyzed with regard to every teacher’s position. We focused on two teachers. One of them was the youngest participant with the least teaching experience. The other teacher, who had over thirty years of teaching experience, was working as a supervisor on the educational board. Semi-structured interviews with these teachers were analyzed to clarify why they joined in the workshops and what the workshops’ value was. The results suggested that every teacher had their own position in the group and felt that participation in the workshop had value for their career.

In the current course of study, the topic of “time-use” has been included in elementary school and high school, but not in junior high school. Introducing the topic of time-use into the junior high school level would make it possible for students to gain insights into the relationship between the individual/ family and society, and would facilitate their further learning through step-by-step implementation. The purpose of this study is to clarify junior high school students’ learning in the process of using the timeuse survey, and to consider the possibility of time-use data as teaching materials and practical use at the junior high school level. A total of 116 students in the first grade of a junior high school participated in the survey. In the teaching practice, it was found that the students gradually deepened their thinking in a way that objectively captured the time-use of ordinary adults, reviewed their own and their families’ timeuse, and considered their future lifestyles. By using time-use data in teaching practice, it was possible to instill critical consciousness of various issues such as the inequality of unpaid and paid work, suggesting the possibilities for the promotion of gender-equal participation in society.
