Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the nursing practice of certified nurses (CN) and certified nurse specialists (CNS) with recognized skills in communicating bad news to cancer patients. A semi-structured interview was conducted with eight participants. The focus of nursing practice is to speak supportively, display empathy and concern, and engage with the patient in a timely manner; to be close to and listen to the patient when they sense their difficulties, and show an affirming attitude, whilst being interested and closely involved with patients, and to verbalize and clarify their anxiety and hesitation. Both the CN and CNS were observed to be sensitive to critical situations and to build a deeper relationship of trust. They clarified the patients' doubts and improved the patients' understanding of their medical condition with sincere and responsible explanations. In addition, they sensed and supported the patients' wishes and motivated them to partake in positive coping strategies for their recovery and acceptance of their diseases.
