Abstract

In this paper, the shape of buoyancy body was experimentally studied to have the body itself a suppression performance on Vortex Induced Vibration. Based on the performances required for the buoyancy body and existing appendages for VIV suppression, some buoyancy body models with helical grooves were created. The ratio of pitch and depth of the groove was fixed, and the groove width was changed as a parameter for VIV suppression performance. In a small circulating water channel, we measured the force acting on the models, the flow field around the models, and the motion of the models. Experimental results showed that the helical groove with adequate width has a possibility of VIV suppression if the ratio of pitch and depth of the groove was fixed.
