Abstract
A focus of surgical operation of the inguinal hernia has been selection of materials with which postoperative discomfort and foreign body reaction decrease. One of the materials is titanium coating lightweight mesh (TiLENE®), with which hernia repair has been performed in elderly and/or thin patients (males, 50-87 years of age, BMI19.4-20.6). External inguinal hernias have been moderate size (I-2) according to the classification of JAPANESE HERNIA SOCIETY. TiLENE® plug, folded in four and grasped, was inserted into the internal inguinal ring. TiLENE® flat mesh was sutured to pubic bone, inguinal ligament, and internal oblique muscle. TiLENE® mesh was easy to handle with smooth, light and soft texture. No patient has felt discomfort nor tension immediately and for 18 to 21 months after surgery without any relapse of hernia. It has been reported that TiLENE® mesh showed less inflammatory reaction and shrinkage compared with standard polypropylene mesh. Results of randomized clinical trial comparing light weight mesh with standard polypropylene mesh indicated that light weight mesh shorten the duration to return to work and daily life.
