Abstract
8 elderly patients with an average age of 90 years old underwent TURP (Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate) to provide relief from indwelling urethral catheters which were in situ for 34.6 months in average. There was no operative or postoperative complications due to the TURP procedure. During the postoperative follow-up of 37.6 months in average, all 8 patients have remained catheter free. The present study is of note because of the advanced ages of the patients and the relatively long follow-up period which has not been previously reported in the literature. As conclusion, advanced patient age should not be considered as a barrier to TURP if oral medication is not effective and patient does not have concomitant medical comorbidities such as cerebral disease, heart disease, pulmonary disease, neurogenic bladder or mental deterioration which may prevent recovery in the post operative period.
