Abstract
Most of prostatectomy for prostatic cancer is now performed laparoscopically including robot-assisted one. However, surgical skills of open prostatectomy should be acquired during residency since indication of open prostatectomy still remains in certain cases, including transfer of laparoscopic prostatectomy to open prostatectomy during surgery. Sixty-four cases of open prostatectomy were performed by 3 beginner urologist (3 years experience in urology in average) under the supervision of same well experienced urologist in Nasu Red Cross Hospital. The average operative time and estimated blood loss was 261 minutes and 1,270ml. Autologous blood transfusion was performed in all cases and additional homologous blood transfusion was performed in one case. Positive surgical margins was observed in 4 of 64 cases (6.25%), and PSA recurrence was noted in 2 cases (3.1%) during average follow up of 32 months. And 79.7% of men were continence. In present study of open prostatectomy performed by 3 beginner urologist showed favorable oncological and functional outcome, although further improvement is required concerning the operative time and blood loss.
