Objective: We report 5 cases of urachal remnants that were treated by laparoscopic urachal excision.
Patients: From April 2016 to July 2017, we treated 5 patients (2 males and 3 females) with urachal remnants by laparoscopic surgery.
Methods: After ensuring remission of any umbilical inflammation, a skin incision was made around the umbilicus, and the muscular layer was exposed. The urachal tissues were excised as far as possible toward the bladder side and clearly dropped into the abdominal cavity. An EZ access was placed at the umbilical portion and a 5-mm port was inserted. Two 5-mm ports were placed in the midabdomen on the right side under laparoscopic guidance. The surgical assistant inserted the laparoscope into the right upper port, and pulled down the urachal tissue through the umbilical port. The surgeon excised the urachal tissue completely via the right lower port.
Results: The average operation time was 103 minutes and the average operative blood loss was 3 ml. None of the patients had any perioperative complications, and all were discharged 4 days after the surgery.
Considerations: We think that our surgical procedure was superior in terms of safety, because the port insertions from the side abdomen were not blind, but conducted under laparoscopic guidance.
