Abstract
The experimental studies were carried out so as to find the influence of elderly drivers regarding the characteristics steering control through the use of a steering simulator. The experiment measured the control action and discriminative reaction time in subjects from young to old. The results obtained are as follows: (1) In the case of the proportional steering system, the influence of age on steering performance was very small. (2) In the case of the steering system of the integral element required to perform the rate action, the control performance of the old declined remarkably, and it had large individual differences. (3) Examining using a simulation model in the steering control action of the subjects, the rate action decrease with age showed a peek at 20s, and over 70s, and control was carried out mostly using proportional action. (4) The discriminative reaction time during the steering control showed the shortest time for those in their 20s and became longer, and for those over 70s it suddenly increased.
