EFFECTS OF SELF-ESTEEM ON PERSON PERCEPTION (II)

Abstract

In the present paper, the effects of selfesteem on the accurate perception of other's interpersonal feelings and other's status in the class were investigated.
The subjects consisted of 169 middle school pupils (93 boys and 76 girls).
Tests used in this experiment are as follows;
(1) near sociometric test
(2) perception test of other's feelings
(3) perception test of other's status
(4) self-esteem scale developed by Nemoto
The results obtained are as follows;
(1) There is found the positive correlation between perceiver's self-esteem and the accurate perception of other's positive feelings.
(2) Perceiver's self-esteem is positively correlated with his positive interpersonal feelings to others and his perception of being liked by others.
(3) There are not found clear relation between self-esteem and the perception of negative feelings.
(4) High self-esteem-group has high sociempathic ability in the perception of other's low status, and Low self-esteem-group has high sociempathic ability in the perception of high status.
(5) High self-esteem-group is inclined to perceive other's status as low, and Low self-esteemgroup as high.
