Abstract
The intensity of high temperature treatments for killing Cedrus deodara pollen was studied in order to find the weakest treatment of decontamination for avoiding injury to pollinating instruments. The results showed that pollen maintained the initial viability after the treatment at 60°C and they were slightly weakened by heat treatment at 70°C and 80°C. In these temperatures duration of high temperature hada little effect on the reduction of viability. The treatment at 90°C for one hour completely killed the pollen.
Cedrus deodara pollen is more tolerant of heat than Cryptomeria japonica, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Pinus densiflora, and Pinus thunbergii pollen, and approximately equal in tolerance to that of some principal European, Asian and American pine species.
