Abstract
A 73-year-old man presented with a chief complaint of pain in the right chest and back. CT revealed a metastatic bone tumor in the right 6th rib. Further examinations revealed a type I gastric cancer at the gastric cardia with an isolated costal metastasis. Induction therapy in the form of S-1 monotherapy was administered. Total gastrectomy and D2 dissection were performed because the costal metastasis showed complete response to induction therapy. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of stage T1b (SM), int, INFb, ly (1), v (1), pN0, H0, P0, CY0. After the gastric remnant was deemed free of residual cancer, radiotherapy was administered for the costal metastasis. At present, 2 years and 5 months after the initiation of treatment, and 1 year and 10 months after surgery, no recurrence or exacerbation has been identified. We believe that successful induction chemotherapy may be the reason for the present recurrence-free status of the patient.
