Abstract
A 66-year-old woman received distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer 75 months ago. She was admitted to our hospital because of umbilical tumor. The laboratory data showed elevated levels of CA19-9. Aspiration biopsy cytology of the tumor revealed adenocarcinoma. No other metastases were detected by CT or PET-CT scan. As solitary umbilical metastasis of gastric cancer was suspected, we performed tumor resection. No peritoneal metastasis was found and peritoneal lavage cytology was negative. Histological findings and an immunohistochemical profile revealed metastasis from gastric cancer. CA 19-9 decreased soon after the surgery. Umbilical metastasis of malignant neoplasm is known as Sister Mary Joseph’s nodule (SMJN). Solitary and late umbilical metastasis of gastric cancer is very rare. We report this case with a literature review of 97 cases of umbilical metastasis of gastric cancer in Japan.
