Abstract
A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the dent-oral conditions, the symptoms of bone and joint, and the systemic symptoms of the patients undergoing hemodialysis. The study subjects consisted of 240 patients undergoing hemodialysis. The mean age was 60.1 years old and mean duration of hemodialysis was 9 years and 4 months.
As for the dent-oral conditions, presence of the thirst which differed from a diminished salivary secretion was suggested. Twenty percent of the patients complained of some type of dental disorder. The patients complaining of symptoms associated with the bone and joint were less than 10% of all patients and 72.1% of all patients felt fatigued and exhausted.
In addition, oral examinations were performed on 26 patients of the respondents, who were capable of coming to our hospital for a checkup of their dental condition. The mean age of these patients was 56.3 years old with mean duration of hemodialysis of 5 years and 6 months. As for these patients, the DMFT index was 21.3 and the mean number of missing teeth per person was 10.5.
