Abstract

Although the Osprey is far from being a rare bird in Japan, to date, no full information has been published regarding its nest and eggs found within the country. Fortunately, on April 27, 1951, I was able to locate a single nest on the island of Awaji in Hyogo Prefecture and present here the following information regarding that eyrie.
Locality: On mountain slope in extreme southern portion of Awaji Island at approximately 450 meters.
Nest: In top of red pine tree, 71/2 meters above the ground.
Outer diameter: 160×160cm.
Inner diameter: 65×65cm.
Overall heiget of nest: 40cm.
Depth: 10cm.
Shape: fairly large and inclined to be flat on top.
Construction: of dead pine branches lined with old straw rope.
Eggs: Number: two (2) in the set.
Measurements Weight Condition
64.0×47.0 mm. 79.0 grams Slightly developed
62.5×45.5 mm. 68.5 grams Infertile
Markings: Blotched and spotted with rich red or chocolate and ashy shell markings on a white ground.
