This paper explores the possibility of establishing a university-based, large-scale, systematized oral history project in Japan. Given the fact that most of the oral history practices in Japan have been examined by individual researchers, our experiences were rather unique in conducting oral histories as a systematized project, particularly in the area of history and social studies of science. In this paper, we survey, categorize, and compare various aspects of oral history, and discuss the issues relevant to a "systematized" oral history project.
