The present study reports the identification of a newly recorded species, Flammulina fennae, in Japan, along with descriptions and illustrations of its morphological characteristics based on specimens collected from Niigata Prefecture. Japanese specimens were well agreement with the original description of F. fennae by rooting pseudorrhiza, almost whitish margin of pileus and almost unbranched ixohyphidia in pileipellis. Maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses of the nuclear rDNA ITS region and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit gene revealed that Japanese, Chinese and European samples of F. fennae consist of a clade except by maximum likelihood analysis of ITS, suggesting that F. fennae is probably distributed continuously from Northern Eurasia to the Japanese Archipelago.
