The present study reports the identification of Bryoperdon acuminatum, a lycoperdaceous species newly recorded for Japanese mycobiota, along with descriptions and illustrations of its morphological characteristics. Small-sized, ovoid to conical basidiomata, absence of subgleba, almost smooth to minutely warted basidiospores and exoperidial spines consisting of globose, subglobose, ovoid to clavate pseudoparenchymatous hyphae are distinctive characteristics of B. acuminatum. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear rDNA sequences support the identity of B. acuminatum between Japanese and European samples.
