A rare case of neuroendocrine carcinoma arising in the lateral border of the tongue is presented. The patient was a 76-year-old malc complaining of swelling of the tongue and the upper cervical rcgion.
The tongue lesion was histopathologically diagnosed as an anaplastic carcinoma, and showed positive reactions to keratin, CEA, EMA, Lcu-7 and NSE in immunohistochemical staining. Based on these findings, the tumor was finally diagnosed to be a neuroendocrine carcinoma. The neck lesion was suspected to be caused by metastases of the tongue carcinoma. Irradiation was effective, resulting in remarkable reductions in the size of both the tongue and neck lesion.
