Abstract

Gingival cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst that rarely occurs in adults. Only two cases of gingival cyst arising from the mandible in adults have been described in the Japanese literature. We report on a 62-year-old woman with a gingival cyst arising in the maxilla. She was referred to our department on June 20, 1999 because of an asymptomatic swelling in the upper left incisal gingiva. Examination revealed a hemispheric, clearly bordered, light reddish cystic lesion measuring 7mm in diameter in the upper left incisal gingiva. We treated the patient by total excision under local anesthesia on July 11, 1999. Histopathologic examination showed a cyst lined with a thin layer of nonkeratinized squamous epithelium within the gingiva. The diagnosis was a gingival cyst in an adult. The postoperative course has been uneventful.
