Abstract
The research used narrative analysis to understand how patients in recovery rehabilitation experience clinical group sessions, based on Ricoeur ' s concept mimeses, investigating collective occupations. Collective occupations have a shared goal, purpose, and function. While these are shared by the members of the group, they also each may have individual goals, or see individual purposes and functions. Each individual brings their past to the collective occupation. While engaging in the collective occupation, they share a common present experience. But once again, each individual makes meaning of that experience through their past experiences. Out of that collective present each individual will use the meaning to bring forth a desire for the future. This desire for future action is one of the major outcomes of collective therapeutic group activities. In this way, the group session uses the social nature of occupations and human beings to help individuals work toward their own future.
