Pollen productivity for the reed (Phragmites australis) marsh was investigated based on direct counting of flowers and pollen around Lake Nishinoko, near the eastern shore of Lake Biwa. Numbers of pollen/anther, florets/spikelet, spikelets/inflorescence, and inflorescences/area were estimated as 1.65 ± 0.38・103 grains, 4.91 ± 0.78 florets, 1.98 ± 0.77・103 spikelets and 19.36 ± 2.96 inflorescence・m-2, respectively. Based on the results, it is estimated that the average reed pollen production around Lake Nishinoko is 9.34 ± 4.70・1012 grains・ha-1. This estimate for the reed marsh is similar to other results of pollen production in Poaceae grasslands based on direct counting methods. Compared with tree pollen production, the relative pollen productivity estimates (RPPE) around Europe showed that Poaceae pollen productions were relatively lower than tree pollen productions. However, pollen production in the reed marsh around Lake Nishinoko is similar with or higher than that in forests estimated by the direct counting method using flower traps.
