Abstract

The fine structure of invading hyphae of Pyricularia oryzae Cav. and invaded inner epidermal cells of rice leaf-sheath, with a compatible combination of race 037 and var. Koshihikari, is observed. The cell wall of the invading hyphae was directly in contact with the cytoplasm of the epidermal cells, suggesting that the invading hyphae penetrated the plasma membrane of the host. Fibrillar structures were occasionally observed at the surface of the cell wall of the invading hyphae.
