Abstract
Purpose: The aim of the investigation was to examine the influence of the use of an opaque layer on the color of high filler containing prosthetic composite resin jacket crowns.
Methods: All specimens were prepared from the following two types of prosthetic composite resins: Artglass (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany) and Estenia (Kuraray, Okayama). The hiding effect of opaque specimens (thickness: 50, 100, 150μm), made of opaque-colored resin pastes, was determined. The influence of the use of an opaque layer on the color was determined by analyzing the color difference between dentin specimens and double-layered specimens. Dentin specimens were made of dentin-colored resin pastes. Double-layered specimens were made of dentin-colored and opaquecolored resin pastes.
Results: No hiding effect was noted for a 50μm-thick opaque specimen made of Estenia. As the thickness of opaque specimens increased, the hiding effect showed a higher value. Artglass opaque specimens outperformed Estenia opaque specimens in the hiding effect at respective thicknesses. Concerning the color of double-layered specimens, all of them had a color difference. As the thickness of an opaque layer increased, the value, chroma and color difference showed higher values.
Conclusions: The use of an opaque layer caused a color difference in high filler containing prosthetic composite resin jacket crowns. As the thickness of opaque layer decreased, lower values were shown. There was a difference in this tendency depending on the kind of materials.
