Date of correction: July 16, 2010 Reason for correction: - Correction: ABSTRACT Details: Wrong : The purpose of this study was to examine Norman's hypothesis on the five major dimensions of personality perception (Norman, 1963; Passini & Norman, 1966). Two experiments were performed using the same method, back translating Norman's original scales and revising Nagashima and others' (1967) native Japanese scales.
1. Norman's peer nomination rating scales consisted of 20 bipolar behavior descriptions (Table 1). Subjects, 91 male and female college students, assigned to several small (7-10 members) same-sex groups were administered these scales. Each person in a rating group was asked to nominate one-third (in fact, two) of the other members of his group (excluding self) on Pole A of each scale and one-third on Pole B. Scores of each person in the group on each scale were calculated, These scores were intercorrelated and a principal component factor analysis was carried out with a varimax solution. The calculating stopped at the eigenvalue of 1.0.
The factor analysis (Table 2) of peer rating data extracted five factors: Extroversion (sociability), agreeableness, conscientiousness (responsibility), emotional stability (toughness), and culture (cultural sophistication). These were generally similar with U.S.A. factors, but some differences involving low loadings on the culture factor and relative high loadings on the extroversion factor were found.
2. To compare with the result of Norman's scales, Nagashima and others' “Self-Differential” measure was used as native peer nomination rating scales. First four adjective bipolar scales of each of their six self-rating factors were selected. Then about 40 students created behavior descriptions typical of each adjective trait. The experimenters selected from these raw materials the most common behavior descriptions for each trait. 118 male and female subjects were given these 24 bipolar behavior descriptions. The procedure, scoring, and calculating were the same as those in Exp. I.
The rating data were separated into only three factors, toughness (volition), likableness, extroversion (Table 3). Thus, there was a discrepancy in the number and structure of factors comparing this result with that using Norman's (1963) scales.
The first three factors of Exp. I and all factors of Exp. II may correspond to the EPA dimensions of meaning proposed by Osgood et al. (1957). However, considering the disparity of factor numbers between these two experiments and findings from other trait rating studies, it may be reasonable to suppose additional dimensions to the underlying structure of the generalized perceiver's perception of others.
