Abstract
Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disease characterized by multiple hemangiomas of the skin and gastro-intestinal (GI) tract. Many such cases encounter difficulties in treatment of gastro-intestinal bleeding. We used perioperative small intestinal endoscopic sclerotherapy for bleeding from multiple small intestinal hemangiomas and were able to reduce small intestinal resection. A 49-year-old woman visited our hospital because of melena and breathlessness. She showed severe anemia and close inspection revealed multiple hemangiomas of the GI tract and skin. We diagnosed it as BRBNS rather than characteristic multiple skin and gastro-intestinal hemangiomas. The endoscopic sclerotherapy was effective for stomach, duodenum and colon hemangiomas, but bleeding from small intestinal hemangiomas persisted, so we performed an operation. By using perioperative endoscopic small intestinal sclerotherapy, we could reduce resection of the small intestine. The postoperative course was good.
