Abstract

This study aims to analysis TOKONOMA as the original design of Japanese houses, of upper classes’ and common ones’. In the imperial palace and Edo castle, Itadoko was used in the official area and Tatamidoko was in the private area. In the imperial palace, Tatamidoko had expanded from 18th century, while in Edo castle, Itadoko had been sticked to use in Ohiroma until the end of in the mid 19th century. On the other hand, in common houses, each local area had own tendency of place and specification based on the comparison with their ancestor worship and guest service.
