Abstract
«Aim» We investigated the results of second-look operations aimed at achieving intestinal continuity after chemotherapy for obstructive colon cancer initially managed with the Hartmann operation.
«Subjects·Methods» We studied 11 cases with obstructive colon cancer in which a second-look operation was performed with the aim of intestinal continuity. We performed second-look operations in cases without recurrence at the 6 month surveillance after the first operation.
«Results» The colostomy could be closed in all cases, but we selected colo-anal anastomosis in 2 cases and ileo-anal canal anastomosis in 1 case. Diverting ileostomy was performed in 4 cases. Peritoneal dissemination was seen in 4 cases, but all were resectable. Postoperative complications were not serious. All cases remain alive without recurrence since the second-look operation.
«Conclusion» It is important to clarify the aim of surgery and the timing of second-look operations.
