Abstract
Ten patients who underwent parastomal hernia repair at our hospital between February 1998 and January 2010, were reviewed. There were 7 women and 3 men with an average age of 70 years. All patients underwent laparotomy. The hernia orifice was covered with a manufactured mesh sheet fixed to an abdominal wall and a colon end. The mean operation time and intraoperative blood loss were 167 minutes and 149 ml, respectively. One patient encountered a small intestine fistula due to the polypropylene mesh. Afterwards, we used a bilayer mesh sheet consisting of polypropylene and expanded polytetrafluoroenthylene. Complications were not found in the other 9 patients. No patient developed recurrence of the hernia. Parastomal hernia repair using a prosthetic mesh is a safe and useful method because of its low recurrence rate and less invasiveness.
