Abstract
We present a patient who was preoperatively diagnosed as having hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML) and who underwent a laparoscopic partial hepatectomy.
A 70-year-old woman was found to have a mass in the left hepatic lobe. Abdominal CT with contrast enhancement (CE) revealed a high density mass in the arterial phase with minimal high density in the late phase. Abdominal MRI revealed that this mass had low intensity on T1-weighted images and high intensity on T2-weighted images. Core needle biopsy was performed, and the tumor was diagnosed as HAML. Since the tumor was positive for both HMB45 and a-smooth muscle actin on immunohistochemical studies, surgery was performed. The tumor was located in the lateral segment of the liver (S3) near the hepatic surface ; laparoscopic resection was indicated. Pathology confirmed HAML as the diagnosis. Laparoscopic hepatectomy is an excellent surgical technique when it is indicated.
