Abstract
The case involved a 33-year-old woman who underwent appendectomy for appendicitis with peritonitis 19 years earlier. She had had bouts of pain at the surgical scar after appendectomy since around December 2006. The surgical scar pain had begun to worsen from around September 2010 and eventually a subcutaneous nodule became to be palpated. The nodule was about 1.5 cm in diameter, unmovable and elastic-hard. Preoperative examinations offered a tentative diagnosis of a Schloffer tumor caused by a suture used for closure of the fascia. The nodule was removed under lumber anesthesia. Histopathology proved endometrial tissue in the removed tissue, and abdominal wall endometriosis was diagnosed.
As for endometriosis, patients who had a history of at least one prior gynecological surgery including cesarean section represent about 80% of all patients with endometriosis in abdominal surgical scars. However, this patient had endometriosis in the abdominal surgical scar after appendectomy. This rare case is presented here.
