Abstract
We report a case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) in the spleen. A 54-year-old woman was found to have a splenic tumor at the time of health screening. She had been under observation for 3 years because she had been diagnosed with a possibly benign tumor, but the tumor grew. We suspected the tumor to be a malignant neoplasm of a benign tumor with hemorrhage and degeneration and performed splenectomy for diagnosis and therapy. Histological findings showed an IPT in the spleen with spindle cells that yielded positive results for EBV by in situ hybridization. Then, we postoperatively diagnosed the patient to have EBV-associated IPT in the spleen. There have been 15 reported cases of IPT in the spleen with EBV infection.
