Abstract
A 66-year-old woman experienced lower abdominal discomfort and was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma arising from the inferior vena cava (IVC). She underwent extirpation of the 8-cm tumor at another hospital. However, complete resection of the tumor was not accomplished.
Routine follow-up CT 7 months after the initial operation showed an enlarged tumor of the IVC, and re-operation was performed in January 2009. The tumor was resected concomitant with the IVC, and the IVC was reconstructed using a 7-cm long external ring-supported ePTFE graft (20-mm diameter). The postoperative course of the patient was uneventful. Liver metastasis in segment 8 (S8) was identified 5 months after the second operation, and S8 segmentectomy was performed. Lateral segmentectomy of the left side of the liver was performed 6 months later as the third operation for relapse. Thereafter, no evidence of recurrence has been identified to date, 27 months after the initial operation.
Thus, we report a case where aggressive surgical treatment for recurrent IVC leiomyosarcoma resulted in a healthy condition without relapse.
