Abstract
A case of urachal remnant presenting with a calculus that was laparoscopically resected is reported. The patient was a man in his 20s with a history of bronchial asthma. He developed periumbilical pain in May 2011 and visited a local physician after also developing a purulent discharge. He was referred to our hospital with a diagnosis of omphalitis. On visiting our hospital, redness and tenderness were observed in the periumbilical region, and an opening was detected deep in the umbilicus. Computed tomography (CT) showed a soft tissue shadow with calcification, 1.7 cm in diameter, directly below the umbilicus, with inflammation in the surrounding area. In addition, this soft tissue shadow was caudally continuous with the anterior bladder wall via a band, and the patient was diagnosed with a urachal remnant. The urachal remnant was resected laparoscopically, the median umbilical ligament including the urachal remnant tissue was resected, and a circular calculus, 9 mm in size, was recovered. Histopathological examination revealed a luminal structure thought to be the urachus that consisted of columnar epithelium. This was a rare case of a urachal remnant presenting with a calculus for which laparoscopic resection was performed.
