Abstract
A 38-year-old man was found to have an asymptomatic splenic mass, 3 cm in size, on abdominal CT scan done for abdominal pain. He was diagnosed as having a splenic hemangioma on abdominal enhanced CT and was followed. However, the mass enlarged, and its malignant potential could not be ignored. He was referred to our department for an operation. A laparoscopic splenectomy was performed so as not to destroy the capsule of the spleen. The postoperative histological findings included those of splenic sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT). We report this case because splenic SANT is rare. In the Japanese literature, only 6 cases of SANT have been reported to date. We describe our case and other SANT cases reported in Japan and review the relevant literature.
