Abstract
We herein report a case of simultaneous intraperitoneal repair of incisional and parastomal hernias using a ParietexTM Composite mesh, and review the literature. The patient was an 82-year-old woman who underwent Hartmann's operation for rectal stenosis of unknown etiology 20 years earlier, and her stoma had not been closed because of rectoanal disfunction. She was diagnosed as to have incisional and parastomal hernias in 2009, but she had been followed conservatively until 2012 when pain around the stoma developed and worsened. Computed tomography demonstrated the incisional hernia to be 15 × 9 cm in diameter and the parastomal hernia, 7 × 6 cm in diameter. We repaired both hernias simultaneously by median incision under general anesthesia. The parastomal hernia was repaired by the Sugarbaker technique using a ParietexTM Composite Parastomal mesh and the incisonal hernia was repaired by inserting another ParietexTM Composite mesh overlapping with the abdominal cavity side of the first mesh. As of 12 months after the operation, the patient exhibits no evidence of hernia recurrence nor other stomal complications.
