Abstract
Mucocele of the appendix is a rare disease, but surgical treatment is necessary due to the dissemination of neoplastic cells and mucoid material in the abdominal cavity caused by appendiceal perforation. The present study involved 11 patients with mucocele of the appendix treated with laparoscopic surgery at the hospital over the last 11 years. The patients were 35-86 years old and had a male-to-female ratio of 3:8. Three patients had abdominal pain and nine had no complaints. Computed tomography showed a cystic lesion within the appendix in all patients, and the tumor sizes were 5.0-13.8 cm (mean, 7.8 cm). The preoperative diagnosis was successfully made as mucocele of the appendix in all cases. Operative interventions included partial laparoscopic resection of the cecum in one case, laparoscopic appendectomy in four cases, and laparoscopic ileocecal resection in six cases. The pathological diagnosis was mucinous adenoma of the appendix in all 11 cases. The postoperative hospitalization duration was 4-15 days (mean, 9.7 days), and there were no postoperative complications. All patients remain alive without recurrence.
