Abstract
A 30-year-old man presented with acute lower abdominal pain. Multi detector-row computed tomography (MDCT) revealed a 5-cm cystic lesion of the ileum supplied by the superior mesenteric artery. These findings indicated the preoperative diagnosis of cystic ileal duplication. Laparoscopy confirmed that the lesion was located on the same side of the mesentery approximately 80 cm from the ileal end, and the lesion was extracorporeally resected with the adjacent ileum. The orbicular cystic lesion in the specimen was 6 × 4 cm and separated from the bowel. Microscopically, the cystic wall consisted of intestinal mucosa, submucosa, and two layers of smooth muscle that were shared with the normal intestine of the region. Cystic duplication in adults is relatively rare and its clinical features are not clear. Here we reported on the clinical features of small intestinal duplication in an adult.
