Abstract
An 80-year-old postmenopausal woman who had been followed with a diagnosis of bilateral intraductal papilloma underwent close exploration because the tumors tended to enlarge. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan failed to evaluate a solid portion of the right breast tumor, and showed irregular malignant enhancement pattern for the left breast tumor. Malignancy was suspected for both breast tumors by ultrasound and contrast-enhanced MRI findings. However, contrast-enhanced ultrasound using a contrast agent Sonazoid® could identify the solid portion to be associated with homogeneous enhancement effect in the cyst for the right breast tumor and it revealed homogeneous enhancement effect localized within the left breast tumor. Both tumors were thus suggested to be benign. Preoperative fine needle biopsy diagnosed the tumors as benign. The both tumors were enucleated and were pathologically diagnosed as intraductal papilloma.
We experienced a case of bilateral intraductal papilloma in which preoperative US and contrast-enhanced MRI were ineffective but contrast-enhanced ultrasound using Sonazoid®was effective in diagnosis. This paper deals with the case with a review of the literature.
