Abstract
Gastric submucosal metastasis from squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary site is extremely rare. A 70-year-old woman with gastric submucosal tumor in the cardia was referred to our hospital and underwent proximal gastrectomy. Histological examination of the resected specimen revealed metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma to the gastric cardia. Fluorodeoxy-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) showed high accumulation in bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymph nodes, but no apparent primary site. She received 4 course of chemotherapy with carboplatin and docetaxel, but died of cancer recurrence 16 months after the surgery. This case might have represented thoracic lymph node carcinoma metastasis to the stomach.
