Abstract
We report a rare complication of laparoscopic ventral incisional hernia repair. An 80-year-old man with bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease underwent laparoscopic ventral incisional hernia repair using mesh fixed to the abdominal wall by non absorbable sutures and metal spinal tacks. Abscess formation of the abdominal wall was noted 2 years after surgery. The abscess was drained and fistulography showed the fistula between the abscess cavity and the small intestine. We excised the mesh and small bowel, which were densely adherent to metal spiral tacks penetrating the small intestine. This is the first report of mesh infection and abscess formation due to metal spiral tacks after laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh repair for incisional hernia.
