Abstract
A 16-year-old boy was brought to our emergency room complaining of impalement injury in the right upper quadrant that accidentally occurred during his volleyball practice. He was fully conscious and his vital signs were remarkable with hypertension. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed three wooden sticks that had penetrated the inferior vena cava (IVC), liver, duodenum, intervertebral disc, and pancreas. An emergency operation was performed. The foreign body that had migrated to the lumen of the IVC was removed under the clamping of the blood flow and all damaged organs were repaired. He recovered without any postoperative complications and was subsequently discharged. An impalement injury including the vena cava can be fatal and swift repair is essential to preserve life. For multiorgan injury, such as in this case, cooperation among various departments and performing a rapid operation is vital for saving life and achieving positive outcomes.
