Abstract
Background : Our medical center performs single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SPLC) as an elective procedure for acute cholecystitis. However, comprehensive outcome data for elective SPLC have not been previously published. This study investigated the utility of SPLC as an elective procedure. Patients and methods : This study included 23 patients who initially underwent elective SPLC and compared clinical outcomes between those in whom surgery was completed using a single port (T group) and those who required additional ports or conversion to open surgery (C group). Results : Surgery was completed through a single port in 14 of the 23 patients, required additional ports in 7 patients, and was converted to open surgery in 2 patients. There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to inflammatory findings based on blood tests or imaging during the acute phase of cholecystitis. Conclusion : Elective SPLC is a useful option regardless of the severity of acute inflammation in patients with cholecystitis.
