Abstract
A 38-year-old woman with recurrent epigastric and right lower quadrant pain was admitted for further assessment of a swollen appendix detected on ultrasonography. Abdominal computed tomography showed cystic changes in the appendix. Both barium enema and colonoscopy revealed submucosal tumor-like elevation of the appendiceal orifice. A mucocele of the appendix was diagnosed, and laparoscopic ileocecal resection with lymph node dissection was performed. Histology identified nests of endometriotic glands and stroma adjacent to a mucocele. In a premenopausal female, endometriosis of the appendix should be considered as a possible cause of appendiceal mucocele.
