Abstract
The patient was an 82-year-old woman who had undergone laparoscopic high anterior resection for rectal cancer 11 years earlier. At a regular outpatient visit after 2 years, contrast-enhanced CT showed an enhancing area in the appendix. The size of this region remained unchanged over the years and there was no regional lymph node swelling. This lesion changed from an enhancing region to a tumor during a regular examination 11 years post-surgery. Well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor or gastrointestinal stromal tumor was suspected, and laparoscopic appendectomy was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed the diagnosis of benign schwannoma.
Appendiceal schwannoma is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively, and extended resection is occasionally performed. We report a case of appendiceal schwannoma treated by laparoscopic appendectomy after 9 years' follow-up. We present our case herein, together with a review of the literature.
