Abstract
Background : Adenoid cystic carcinoma affects mainly the salivary glands. It is a extremely rare tumor accounting for<1% of adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix. We report herein on a case of primary adenoid cystic carcinoma stageIb2 with atypical squamous cells.
Case : An 80-year-old woman with massive genital bleeding was brought to the emergency room. The swelling of the uterine cervix and a scraping smear and biopsy specimens suggested adenoid cystic carcinoma.
Cytologically, the tumor cells were dispersed as single cells, and demonstrated a high N/C ratio. There were many dense aggregates of cells and cysts of a cribriform appearance. In part, the mass contained mucinous materials.
The histological analysis of the tumor cells demonstrated a mixed solid and cribriform pattern. This is recognized as a feature of adenoid cystic carcinoma.
Conclusion : Adenoid cystic carcinomas have aggregates of tumor cells contained in cysts with pale mucinous materials, and may have atypical squamous cells. Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a extremely rare tumor and the optimal definitive treatment has not yet been established. The prognosis is not good, therefore, the diagnosis should be performed carefully.
